Настоящее издание является продолжением серии публикаций "Дмитриевский собор во
Владимире. Материалы и исследования", выпускаемой Сектором редких книг и рукописей
Владимирской областной универсальной научной библиотеки им. М.Горького*. Выпуск посвящен анализу изображений льва в резьбе собора - выдающегося памятника белокаменного зодчества Северо-Восточной Руси домонгольского периода, построенного князем Всеволодом III в конце XII века.

Изображения львов в резьбе этого храма занимают ведущее место. Сопровождая центральные образы и располагаясь в узловых пространственных зонах, они выражают несколько программных тем резного убранства памятника.

Выпуск включает в себя четыре отдельные статьи. В первой из них впервые за историю изучения соборного декора на основе каталожного обследования резных изображений автор дает полный обзор всех львиных мотивов, выявляя их принадлежность к определенным тематическим группам и объясняя их символическое звучание.

Во второй статье делается попытка рассмотрения львиных изображений в контексте отдельной композиции, в их взаимодействии с центральным образом выбранного компартимента.

Третья статья представляет ранее неизвестную надпись возле изображения Давида на львином троне в вершине южного портала, которое ранее считалось изображением Соломона.

Выпуск включает в себя также публикацию рельефа южной апсиды, на котором представлена погрудно Богоматерь - единственное фигурное изображение среди резьбы восточного фасада.

В выпуске помещен обширный иллюстративный материал из каталога резной пластики собора, который готовится автором к публикации. Нумерация иллюстраций в некоторых случаях дается с нарушением последовательности, с тем чтобы обеспечить наглядное сопоставление близких изображений.

This issue is the next in a number of publications "St. Demetrius Cathedral in Vladimir.
Proceedings and Researches" published by Rare Books and Manuscripts Department of Vladimir
Regional Universal Scientific Library named after M. Gorky*. The issue is devoted to the
analysis of the lion's images in the fretwork of the Cathedral which is an outstanding monument
of the limestone architecture of North-Eastern Russia (pre-mongol period) built by Prince
Vsevolod III at the end of the 12th century.

The lions' images take a leading place in the carving of this temple. By accompanying the
central images and by being situated in constructively important zones they express several
leading themes in the fretwork of the monument.

This issue consists of four separate articles. In the first one, for the first time in the history of
the research of the Cathedral ornament, the author (on the basis of catalogue inspection of the
carved images) gives a complete survey of all lion motifs, exposing their belonging to the definite
subject groups and explaining their symbolic idea.

The second article is an attempt to examine the lions' images in the context of a separate
composition as well as in their interaction with the central image of the chosen fragment.
The third article represents the earlier unknown inscription near David's image on the lion
throne in the upper section in the southern portal. Earlier, David's image was considered to be
Solomon's.

The issue also includes the publication of the relief of the southern apsis, which shows the
Holy Virgin in half-length. It is the only figured carving in the fretwork of the eastern fa§ade.
A great number of illustrations from the Cathedral fretwork catalogue being prepared by the
author for publication, are inserted in the issue. In some parts of the issue the illustration
numbering is given without succession in order to provide the obvious comparison of close
images.
