Настоящее издание является продолжением серии публикаций “Дмитриевский собор во Владимире. Материалы и исследования”, выпускаемой Сектором редких книг и рукописей Владимирской областной универсальной научной библиотеки им. М.Горького*.

Публикуется очередная часть каталога белокаменной резьбы, включающая описание девяноста пяти рельефов центрального прясла северного фасада.

В истории изучения Дмитриевского собора, которая насчитывает уже почти два столетия, крайне насущная работа по каталогизации каждого рельефного камня предпринята впервые. Этому предшествовало длительное и трудоемкое изучение материальной основы рельефов, труднодоступных непосредственно на памятнике.

Цель работы — ввести всю рельефную пластику собора в научный оборот. Сплошное первичное описание материала, составляющее основу исследования, сопровождено научными обобщениями, касающимися стилистических особенностей и содержания резьбы, ее символики, уточнения иконо-графии отдельных мотивов, сопоставления их с аналогиями из искусства эпохи средневековья. Сложность объекта обусловлена нерешенностью целого ряда проблем (программного замысла, положения in situ резных блоков из-за неоднократных перестроек и реставрационных вмешательств, многогранности символической наполненности образов). Это заставляет прибегать к рассмотрению семантики мотивов и к иконографическим сопоставлениям в пределах отдельных камней, в контексте их ближайшего окружения, прясла и собора в целом и далее — в контексте всего храмового декора романской эпохи.

Выпуск дополнен отдельным исследованием резных образов пятого ряда прясел не только северного, но западного и южного фасадов. Это исследование, впервые проделанное в таком цельном варианте, весьма важно и актуально. Оно способствует решению ряда научных вопросов, в том числе атрибуции отдельных образов ряда, а также уточнению содержания программы резной декорации храма.

This publication continues the series of publications about “The St. Demetrius Cathedral in the city of Vladimir, materials and research”, published by the department of Rare Books and Manuscripts in the M. Gorky Vladimir Regional Universal Scientific Library*.

This is a continuance of the publication of the catalogue of white limestone carvings, including the ninety-five reliefs in the central section of the northern facade.

This most necessary work, to catalogue every relief, is being done for the first time in the two century history of the St. Demetrius Cathedral investigation. A long, labour intensive investigation into the reliefs in difficult to access areas of the cathedral has preceded this work.

The aim of the work is to make available all the cathedral reliefs in the scientific investigation. The primary cathedral description, which is the basis of the investigation, is followed by general scientific conclusions dealing with stylistic features and the essence of its carving, symbols and the more detailed study of some of its iconographic motifs and their comparison with analogues of medieval art. The cathedral study has been hindered by a number of problems (which have been difficult to solve, for example, the intended, plans of the carved decoration, the positioning of the carved blocks due to reconstructions and restoration, and the situation of the multifaceted symbolic images). Due to this it is necessary to examine the motifs and compare the iconography of each stone with respect to its nearby surroundings, in sections, the cathedral as a whole and then within the context of temple decoration of the Romance era.

This publication is supplemented by a number of investigations of carved images, in the fifth tier not only of the north facade, but also on the west and south faces. This investigation, carried out in such a manner for the first time is not only innovative but important. It aims to solve a number of scientific problems including the attribution of some of the images to the tier and to clarify the notion of carved decoration of the cathedral.
